Are Your Health Insurance Premiums Too High!!!

Whether you’re covered by an employer sponsored group health plan or have an individual health insurance program, chances are you are paying a good portion of the premium dollars each month yourself.  As we all know, these costs continue to rise each and every year, with no end in sight.  There are options that are much less expensive, but they normally have limited benefits or provide only a small portion of the coverage necessary when you need it the most.  However, there are plans that not only reduce your premium costs, but still offer full major medical coverage and can also save you hundreds of dollars or more each year in taxes.   These are Health Savings Account (or HSA) plans.  The philosophy behind these types of plans is pretty simple… you are insured by a qualified high deductible health plan and the out-of-pocket expenses are paid through a separate checking account that you establish.  The contributions… not the distributions… to this account are deductible each year when filing your taxes.   And even though the plan’s deductible is generally higher than what many have carried in the past, the total out-of-pocket expense, should you ever need to utilize the plan, are often times far less.  HSA plans aren’t for everyone, but they certainly offer an option that will save a lot of premium dollars, which is something we can all appreciate.  If you are not currently enrolled in an HSA plan, contact your Barney Insurance representative who will be more than happy to make a comparison for you.

Do you have a Home Tornado Plan???

Spring is around the corner and along with the warmer weather comes the threat of severe storms and tornadoes.  While we have no control over the weather, we do have the ability to protect our families and ourselves by implementing a Home Tornado Plan.  There are many websites that can be accessed to provide valuable information on how to put these plans together… most notably the American Red Cross.  They advise that families should identify a place where everyone should gather if a tornado is headed your way, preferably a basement, lower level center hallway, bathroom or closet.  And also to have a Disaster Supply Kit that includes a First Aid kit, canned food and an opener, at least 3 gallons of water per person, protective clothing, blankets or sleeping bags, battery operated radios and flashlights with extra batteries, special items for infant, elderly or disabled family members and written instructions for how to turn off electricity, gas and water if authorities advise you to do so.  They also suggest that candles should NEVER be used.  Also, it is important to regularly update any perishable items in the kits so that they are there and ready to be used when needed.

We can protect our homes, autos and businesses with proper insurance protection, but most importantly we need to be mindful of protecting ourselves.  Contact your Barney Insurance rep for a policy review to make sure your coverage is up to date…. especially if you’ve made some major improvements or additions to your home since your policy was written.  We are all looking forward to the Spring and Summer seasons, but let’s not forget to be safe in all you do!
